Laird Park honors John W. Laird, a pioneer of 1846 who was a Mexican War veteran, miner, ferryman, and civic leader. He established the first private school in this area and served as a commissioner in the organization of Stanislaus County in 1854. He was born in 1806 in Penn. and died in 1878 in Calif.
