During the first half of the twentieth century, this field was known as the Derry Borough Athletic Field and was home to the Derry Rams football team. In 1956, Derry Borough High School (Rams) combined with Derry Township High School (Eagles), and the Derry Area Trojans were born. For the next decade, the old Athletic Field was used for other recreational and sporting activities such as baseball and softball. In December 1965, Derry Borough received a $20,000 grant from the Richard King Mellon Foundation to revitalize the park with a new track, ice skating park, picnic areas, basketball court, tennis courts, night lighting and restrooms. In 1968, directors from the Derry Community Development Corporation voted to rename the Athletic Field Derry Community Park. A 2016 Greenways, Trails and Recreation Grant funded the first set of major renovations in 50 years, providing an updated park for Derry's community for years to come.
