Idlewild and Soak Zone, near Ligonier in the Laurel Highlands, began in 1878 as a railroad campground and picnic ground created by Thomas Mellon to attract passengers. It grew from modest pleasure grounds into Pennsylvania’s oldest amusement park and one of the nation’s oldest operating parks, while keeping a strong focus on families and young children. Over time it added rides, landscaped grounds, Story Book Forest, water attractions, and the Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood of Make-Believe trolley ride. Despite flood damage, wartime closure, and several ownership changes, Idlewild has remained known for its wooded setting, long traditions, and recognition as a leading children’s park.
