The Gibson County Courthouse, built in 1899, is the fourth courthouse to occupy this site. The first courthouse was a log structure built in 1824, the year after the county was organized in a process begun by David Crockett while he was a state legislator. The second courthouse, a brick building, was erected in 1829. In 1839, another brick courthouse was constructed, and it served until it was removed in 1899. James K. Polk and Andrew Johnson were among the notable figures who spoke at this site.
