The Frolic struck a rock in heavy surf, losing its rudder and suffering a hole in the hull as it began to sink. Captain Faucon managed to beach the ship in a cove after it kept turning into the rocks. The captain, officers, and most of the crew then rowed away into the night in a leaking boat, and because their lives were in danger, the captain left some of the men at the mouth of a large river before he and his officers continued on in the good boat. The ship’s cargo of silks, ceramics, and bottles of ale from China and beyond was scattered and became treasure for Pomo people and new settlers for miles around. Later, a man named Ford reached the wreck and found nothing to salvage there, but he discovered the huge old trees growing along the river to the south.
