The Lutheran Church of the Holy Trinity was organized in November 1869 in the chapel of North Carolina College, which served as its first place of worship circa 1867-72. Its church edifice was erected in 1872 directly west across South Main Street and faced Mont Amoena Female Seminary. North Carolina College, later continued as Mount Pleasant Collegiate Institute from 1903-1933, stood 0.4 mile north on the crest of the hill, and the church was closely affiliated with these Lutheran schools. An Education Wing was added in 1949, and the church was entered in the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior on 12 May 1986.
