Built under the direction of General George Crook in the early 1870's, this trail began at Fort Whipple, wound down to Fort Verde, and continued eastward across the Mogollon Rim to Fort Apache for 200 miles. It served as a supply route for wagons and pack animals and as a tactical road for the cavalry during the Apache Indian Campaign. A few old trees and rocks still bear original blazes marking the mileage from various forts, and many landmark names, such as Thirteen Mile Rock and Twentynine Mile Lake, come from those mileages.
