Fossil Springs Wilderness is an 11,550-acre wilderness area in Arizona within the Coconino National Forest, at the bottom of a steep canyon on the edge of the Colorado Plateau south of the Mogollon Rim. Its defining feature is unusually abundant water rising to the surface at about 2,700 cubic feet per minute. That steady, perennial flow supports one of Arizona’s most diverse riparian ecosystems, with more than 30 species of trees growing among native desert shrub. The canyon’s reliable water also makes it an important refuge for wildlife, including elk, deer, javelina, coyote, fox, mountain lion, black bear, and more than 100 bird species.
