Burrows Cave is the name given to an alleged cave in southern Illinois that Russell E. Burrows claimed to have discovered in 1982 near the Embarras River by Olney, though he never revealed its exact location and no independent party has found it. Burrows and later promoter Frank Joseph said it contained passages, sealed chambers, mummies, weapons, scrolls, statues, and carved stone tablets linked to Old World peoples, but the story shifted in major details and thousands of tablets were sold to collectors. Because of conflicting accounts, secrecy, forged objects, and no verifiable evidence, archaeologists and anthropologists widely regard the cave as a hoax.
