On July 31 - August 1, 1874, chemists from 15 states, the District of Columbia, Canada and England met here to celebrate the centennial of Priestley’s discovery of oxygen. Discussions at that meeting led to the founding of the American Chemical Society in 1876. Priestley was honored for his scientific contributions and for the inspiration he provided for the society’s establishment.
