The General
Nature
The General is a prominent 10,329-foot summit in central Idaho’s Salmon River Mountains, within the Frank Church–River of No Return Wilderness and Salmon–Challis National Forest. Ranking as the range’s second-highest peak and the wilderness’s third-highest point, it rises steeply above nearby terrain, with especially strong local relief above Lightning Creek and Mystery Lake. Runoff from its slopes flows into tributaries of the Salmon River. The mountain lies in an alpine subarctic climate, marked by long, cold, snowy winters, cool to warm summers, and severe winter temperatures with dangerous wind chills. Today it stands out as a notable wilderness peak in one of Idaho’s most rugged mountain regions.
