Breckenridge Ski Resort, west of the Continental Divide in Breckenridge, Colorado, grew from its 1961 opening on Peak 8 into a major alpine destination spanning five peaks and 2,908 acres. As it expanded through the 1960s, 1970s, and beyond, it added new terrain, lifts, and improved connections between base areas and the town itself. The resort became especially important in the history of lift technology, installing the world’s first high-speed detachable quad in 1981 and later adding other unusual and influential lifts. Its broad range of terrain and innovations in mountain access helped make it one of the Western Hemisphere’s most visited ski resorts.
