Fruit and Spice Park is a thirty-seven-acre botanical garden in Redland south of Miami, created to showcase the fruits, herbs, spices, and other edible plants suited to South Florida’s subtropical climate and the Redland’s agricultural landscape. The project grew from Mary Calkins Heinlein’s efforts beginning in 1935, with county commissioner Preston B. Bird completing land acquisition in 1943 and construction starting in 1944 under landscape architect William Lyman Philips. Intended as both a public park and a living display of tropical agriculture, it now features more than 500 varieties of edible plants and remains a distinctive public expression of the region’s fruit-growing potential.
