Coral Castle in Leisure City, Florida, is a singular complex of oolitic limestone created largely by Edward Leedskalnin, a Latvian-American who spent more than 28 years building it. Begun around 1923 in nearby Florida City and moved between about 1936 and 1939 to its present site, it includes massive stone walls, carvings, furniture, a tower, and features such as a sundial and polar telescope. Celebrated for tightly fitted dry stone construction and for the mystery Leedskalnin encouraged about his methods, the site combines folk engineering, legend, and roadside attraction history. After his death in 1951, it continued as a privately operated visitor destination.
