Western Heritage Center is a regional history museum in downtown Billings, Montana, housed in the former Parmly Billings Memorial Library, a 1901 Richardsonian Romanesque building listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Opened in 1971 after local citizens saved the old library from demolition, it was conceived as an interpretive center with changing exhibits, outreach, and early use of new technologies. Its collections and programs center on south-central Montana, the Northern Plains, and the Yellowstone River Valley. Caring for 40,000 artifacts and oral histories, it has also earned statewide and national recognition, including Smithsonian affiliation and support for preserving Crow and Northern Cheyenne histories.
