As Billings’s motel industry expanded rapidly after World War II amid a booming national economy and rising automobile travel, the Dude Rancher Lodge stood out as the city’s most distinctive motel by combining modern amenities with a strong connection to the region’s Old West heritage. Billings businessman Percy Goan and his wife, Annabel, worked with the local architectural firm of Cushing and Terrell to create a design inspired by Montana frontier ranch houses, using bricks salvaged from the old St. Vincent’s Hospital and wood beams from a recently demolished milling company. The rustic Ranch style motel featured weeping brick mortar, full-length porches in the central parking area, and guest rooms with wood-paneled doors. Annabel Goan designed an interior with knotty pine paneling, decorative lampshades, custom-built western-style furniture, and carpeting bearing the brands of local ranchers who invested in the project. Its Stirrup coffee shop added western-themed dining. Completed in 1950, the Dude Rancher Lodge quickly became a local showcase and a popular place to stay for travelers from across Montana and the United States. The Goan family operated it until 1990, and under its second owner in 2010 it remained Billings’s most distinctive motel.
