Roanoke, nine miles west, was the home of John Randolph, who served for many years as a member of the House of Representatives and as a Senator. Randolph was at first Jefferson's lieutenant and later an opponent and critic, but he never lost the love of his constituents. He died in Philadelphia on May 24, 1833, was buried here, and later his remains were removed to Richmond.
