Originally known as the Rio Courts, the Rio Siesta Motel was expanded and renamed in the early 1960s. The hotel became best known for its large neon sign, created to attract customers from the busy road. The tall sign featured a man in a sombrero leaning against a cactus, a popular Southwest motif at the time, and large flashing lights. After many years, the hotel closed to travelers. The sign was preserved after a storm blew it down in 2014, and it was donated to the Billboard Museum Association.
