Cumberland Gap was the first great gateway to the west, where buffalo, Native Americans, longhunters, and pioneers all traveled through the mountains into the wilderness of Kentucky. Today, explorers and travelers stand in awe of this gateway and the many miles of trails and scenic features found in the park. Summers at Cumberland Gap are hot and humid, with temperatures commonly in the mid to upper 90s. Winters are generally mild with rain and some periods of snow from January through March, with temperatures usually ranging in the 30s and 40s. Weather can sometimes be unpredictable, especially at higher elevations.
