Paul McCarton was remembered as the valley's model Boy Scout and the youngest local Eagle Scout. A twelve foot deodar tree was dedicated in this park on December 26, 1928 by the Montrose - La Crescenta Boy Scouts, Verdugo Hills Council, to honor his short meritorious life. His parents later placed a small concrete bench under the tree, with a bronze plaque in its center memorializing him. Over the years fierce winds uprooted the tree and vandals destroyed the bench. His accidental death at the age of 16 saddened the entire community, and he was remembered as an extraordinary young man who cherished and practiced the Scout oath and code. As a close friend and fellow Eagle Scout said, to Paul, Scouting was not a hobby or pastime, but the job of living a life of useful service.
