Beulah Baptist Church was founded by charter members Elizabeth Brooks, David S Brooks, Thomas J. Drummond, Nancy Leatherwood, John Leopard, Albert M. Tandy, Matilda Tandy, Ralph Tandy, Luke Thornton, Sarah Thornton, and Rev. Matthew Pickett Smith. Its first building was made of hewn logs, and on the same property today stand the red brick sanctuary and educational rooms erected in 1948. Rev. Matthew Pickett Smith served as pastor from 1836 to 1881, and the first Sunday School was organized in 1877 with Thomas J. Nix as superintendent. Over the years, members went from this church to serve as leaders in various places.
