John Henry “Doc” Holliday became notorious in the West as a gambler and gunfighter, though Wyatt Earp reportedly remembered him as a loyal friend, good company, and a dentist turned gambler by necessity and vagabond by disease. In reality, he was a dying man with no hope of recovery. He died of consumption (tuberculosis) in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, on November 8, 1887, at age 36. The same disease had earlier claimed his mother, Alice Jane, and his adopted brother, Francisco Edalgo (born Hidalgo). Local lore holds that after hearing of his son’s death, Henry Holliday traveled from Valdosta to Colorado and brought Doc back to Griffin for burial in his hometown. Some Holliday historians have identified this unmarked plot as the possible burial site of John Henry “Doc” Holliday, and some also believe a second unmarked grave belongs to Henry Holliday, who may have wished to be buried beside his son despite their estranged relationship.
