John Henry “Doc” Holliday was born in Griffin on August 14, 1851, and the Holliday family home where he spent his early years is believed to have stood on this lot. The property was one of fourteen owned by the Holliday family on this street. Although he was the only living child of Henry Holliday and Alice Jane McKey Holliday, Doc did not grow up as an only child, because he had an adopted brother, Francisco Edalgo, born Hidalgo. After serving in the Mexican-American War, Henry Holliday brought the orphaned Francisco to Griffin, and by the time Doc was born, Francisco was already in his teens. Within a few years, Francisco left the Holliday household to begin a family of his own about 20 miles east of Griffin. In 1856, after the death of Alice Jane's father, William Land McKey, the household grew when Henry became guardian of four of his wife's siblings. At age five, Doc was joined by his young aunts and uncles, who ranged from 10 to 14 years old. Eight years later, some of the McKey aunts followed the Hollidays south to avoid the approaching Civil War while the uncles were in the midst of battle.
