Authorized in 1857, manufactured in 1858, and first used in 1859, this bell rang from Independence County's second courthouse, the first on this site, summoning citizens to meetings, warning them of danger, and calling them to celebrate. Today it continues to symbolize the county's great heritage. Designed by J. W. Cummings.
