SunWatch Indian Village in Dayton, Ohio, preserves and reconstructs a Fort Ancient village based on archaeological excavation at a site beside the Great Miami River. First identified after prehistoric material was found in the 1960s, it was excavated beginning in 1971 and saved from planned sewage plant construction when important artifacts and a stockaded village were uncovered. Research indicates a circular, palisaded community of about 250 people lived here for roughly 20 years, farming and hunting. Studies of the site have made it a key source for understanding Fort Ancient life, including houses, diet, burial practices, social organization, and possible solar-calendar observations tied to ritual and seasonal timekeeping.
