The first people in Ohio were the Paleo-Indians, hunter-gatherers who lived in mobile groups of a few dozen people. They hunted now-extinct megafauna such as mammoths, mastodons, and ground sloths, as well as deer and small game, while gathering wild foods including fruit, nuts, and edible plants. During the Paleo-Indian period, glaciers had retreated, leaving a vibrant landscape of spruce and fir trees.
