Chequamegon Point Light, built in 1897 at the western tip of Long Island in Wisconsin, guided ships into Chequamegon Bay and toward Ashland and Washburn as regional shipping shifted away from La Pointe. It replaced the navigational role of the 1858 La Pointe lighthouse, whose lens was installed in the new 42-foot steel tower when the light first shone on October 11, 1897. Maintained from the older station and later modernized with a sidewalk, electric light, and automation, the lighthouse also faced constant erosion on its exposed sand bar site. Repeated protection and repair efforts failed to end that threat, leading to plans in 2026 to dismantle the historic tower.
