Heronswood in Kingston, Washington, began in 1987 as a 10-acre garden and specialty plant nursery created by Dan Hinkley and Robert Jones, later expanding to 15 acres. Built around plants collected worldwide, it tested and propagated rare species for introduction into the North American nursery trade and earned international praise for inventive, environmentally sensitive design. Known for collections including hydrangeas, hardy ferns, woodland lilies, and hardy begonias, it later passed to the W. Atlee Burpee Company, which closed the Heronswood business in 2006. Since 2012, the Port Gamble S’Klallam Tribe has restored and preserved it as a community asset and significant Pacific Northwest garden.
