Combat Wounded Veterans
Military
3
This dedication honors recipients of the Purple Heart, the nation's oldest military decoration, and combat-wounded veterans across generations of service. It links the decoration to the years 1782 and 1932 and includes a verse by John Detommaso: “My stone is red for the blood they shed. The medal I bear is my country's way to show they care. If I could be seen by all mankind maybe peace will come in my lifetime.” It also records a long roll of service members from conflicts including World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Kabul in 2021, naming those who were wounded, killed in action, awarded the Purple Heart, or otherwise honored for combat service.
