In Abiquiú, New Mexico, Georgia O'Keeffe's home and studio became the center of her life and work from 1943 until 1984. Part of a compound with sections believed to date to the 1730s, the adobe house preserved traditional regional features such as thick walls, vigas, latillas, and rooms arranged around a central patio, while O'Keeffe adapted it with modernist skylights and large picture windows. After first noticing the deteriorated property in the 1930s, she bought it from the Roman Catholic Church in 1943 and, with Maria Chabot, completed its rehabilitation in 1946. It is now a major Southwestern artistic site and a National Historic Landmark.
