Trail of Death
History
3
On Oct. 23, 1838, about 800 Potawatomi Indians camped near here at Thomas' encampment during their forced removal from Indiana to Kansas. They had marched 10 miles after ferrying the Grand River, and wet bottom lands and severe cold made the march miserable. More than 40 Indians died on the Trail of Death.
