Found in the Old Woman Mountains of southern California in late March 1976, the Old Woman meteorite is the largest meteorite discovered in California and the second largest found in the United States. This mostly iron mass, containing about 6 percent nickel and traces of other elements, originally weighed 6,070 pounds. Prospectors Mike Jendruczak and David Friberg found it and filed a placer claim with a third partner, but ownership was contested by the Smithsonian Institution and settled in favor of the U.S. government. The Smithsonian remained legal curator, and the meteorite was ultimately placed on long-term display in California, where the main mass is now in Barstow.
