Margarita Lookout
History
1
Margarita Lookout, also called Santa Margarita Lookout, was a fire lookout site in the Santa Margarita Mountains of northern San Diego County, within the Santa Ana Mountains and Cleveland National Forest. Built about a mile north of Margarita Peak, it was reached by Margarita Road, or the Truck Trail. The first tower was erected in 1935 by the Civilian Conservation Corps during California’s expansion of mountaintop wildfire detection. A replacement tower and cabin went up in 1965, but both burned in a 1986 wildfire. In 1988, the damaged tower was hit by a Marine Corps CH-46E helicopter and removed soon after. Only the concrete foundation remains.
