The Brattan-Taylor-Truitt Home is one of the oldest buildings in town and holds special historical significance. Joseph Brattan built the house about 1840 on the tract called "Ill Neighborhood," which the Brattan family had owned since the 1700s, and at that time he also operated the nearby grocery store. The house was later sold to Thomas Taylor, who had also become owner of the grocery, and at Taylor's death both passed to Stephen Calloway, who later sold the property to his daughter Margaret Truitt in 1913. Descendants of the Truitts still live there. Especially notable are the outbuildings, including a pre-1850s smoke or meat house used to smoke and preserve meat until the 1950s, and a gazebo-like pump house that covers a hand-dug, brick-lined well.
