Salem Sue is a giant fiberglass Holstein cow on School Hill above New Salem, North Dakota, overlooking Interstate 94 as a tribute to the region’s dairy farming tradition. Built in 1974 for $40,000 through donations from local farmers and residents and sponsored by the New Salem Lions Club, it was designed by Dave Oswald and fabricated in La Crosse, Wisconsin, then transported in three sections and assembled on the hill. Hollow and immense at 38 feet high, 50 feet long, and about 12,000 pounds, it became one of North Dakota’s best-known roadside attractions and the state’s second giant roadside animal monument.
