Salem Sue, the world’s largest Holstein cow, stands 38 feet high, 50 feet long, and weighs 12,000 pounds. It was erected in 1974 at a cost of nearly $40,000.00 contributed by dairymen, farmers, businessmen, the dairy industry, and area residents. The New Salem Lions organized the project and continue to maintain the site. The New Salem High School athletic teams use the name “Holsteins” as a tribute to the area’s dairy industry, and New Salem is recognized as one of North Dakota’s pre-eminent dairy centers.
