Dairy Hill, a 1,844-foot summit in the Town of Norway, Herkimer County, became part of New York’s forest fire detection network when the Civilian Conservation Corps built a steel fire lookout tower there in 1934. Supplied by the United States Forest Service and first staffed in 1935, the site served both practical and public purposes, with observers reporting six fires and recording 568 visitors that first year. Fire lookout operations continued until 1986. After severe vandalism, the tower and its cabin were removed, leaving Dairy Hill notable chiefly for its former role in protecting the surrounding landscape.
