Perkins Arboretum, Colby College’s 128-acre woodland on Mayflower Hill Drive in Waterville, Maine, was established in 1946, later dedicated to Professor and Mrs. Edward Henry Perkins, and reached its present size in 1969. Used for teaching, research, and public enjoyment, it has been preserved by order of Colby’s Board of Trustees in its natural state, without cutting or alteration of its habitat. More like protected woodland than a formal garden, it supports a diverse plant community including apple, ash, aspen, birch, beech, cherry, hemlock, maple, oak, pine, alder, cattails, ferns, clubmoss, partridge berry, trillium, and wintergreen.
