Jackie Jones Mountain, a 1,253-foot peak west of Stony Point in Rockland County, is closely tied to fire detection in the lower Hudson Valley. Its summit lookout evolved from a wooden structure to a 60-foot steel tower installed by the Palisades State Park Commission in 1928, then operated by the Conservation Department beginning in 1931. The tower served for decades in watching for forest fires until the end of the 1988 season and was officially closed in early 1989. Restored in 2019, it is now on the National Historic Lookout Register and open to the public, preserving the mountain’s role in regional conservation history.
