Glen Ellyn's train service began on October 24, 1849, when a Galena & Chicago Union railway train puffed through on its way to Wheaton. Pulled by the famous 10-ton wood burning engine The Pioneer, the train was escorted through the village by a throng of excited, drum-beating, fife-playing residents led by Dr. Lewey Q. Newton, who carried the stars and stripes. Dr. Newton erected the original depot and water tank at his own expense. The station bore his name until 1851, when it was renamed Danby to avoid confusion with another town and post office named Newton.
