Matthew Leonard was born in Eutaw, Alabama, on Nov. 26, 1929, and was awarded the Medal of Honor for gallantry at Suoi Da, South Vietnam. While under attack, SFC Leonard charged an enemy machine gun and, even though wounded, continued to command his men until his death on Feb. 28, 1967. President Lyndon B. Johnson awarded the Medal of Honor on Dec. 19, 1968.
