Chatham veterans served in the Civil War and later wars, including men listed as captains, lieutenants, sergeants, corporals, a nurse, and soldiers in units such as the 2nd, 8th, 9th, 10th, 29th, 41st, 42nd, 70th, 84th, 85th, 124th, 128th, and 182nd Ohio regiments, the Ohio Volunteer Cavalry, sharp shooters, and Hundred Days Men. Among them were men killed in action, men who died of disease or wounds, one man killed by a boiler explosion in 1865, and later war dead from World War I and World War II, including Guy E. Musser, Dale Hubbard, L. W. Clinesmith, Robert Spies, and George Pugh.
