At the Battle of Bloody Marsh, Oglethorpe declared that he and his men were resolved not to suffer defeat and would rather die like Leonidas and his Spartans if they could protect Georgia, Carolina, and the rest of the Americans from desolation. On this spot, a great victory was won over the Spaniards on July 7, 1742.
