Fort St. Simons was built on this site by English troops under the command of General James Edward Oglethorpe in 1738. It guarded the entrance to the Frederica River, through which ships had to pass to reach Fort Frederica. Together with nearby Delegal's Fort, it made the southern tip of St. Simons Island the most heavily fortified area in Georgia. Spanish soldiers destroyed Fort St. Simons in 1742.
