Thomas McCarty was a pioneer settler and rancher of Calaveras County who discovered copper ore at Copperopolis, California, in 1860. He developed the mine and was the principal share owner. The town was named for the copper ore, and it became a boom town during the Civil War because copper was used in making war implements.
