Sheep Rock, in western Idaho’s Payette National Forest about 45 miles northwest of Council, rises above Hells Canyon as an overlook valued more for its sweeping views than as a summit climb. Designated a National Natural Landmark in 1976, it is geologically significant for exposing two contrasting layer sequences of the Columbia River Basalt Group divided by an unconformity, making a break in the geologic record especially visible. Its name preserves the memory of bighorn sheep that once lived here. A mile-long interpretive trail leads to the canyon overlook, and nearby Kinney Point is another canyon viewpoint at an older lookout site.
