Wallowa National Forest was the former forest unit that became the Wallowa portion of northeastern Oregon’s Wallowa-Whitman National Forest. Located mostly in Wallowa County, it also extended into Union County, Oregon, and into Nez Perce and Idaho counties in Idaho. Established as the Wallowa Forest Reserve on May 6, 1905, it was combined with the Chenismus Forest Reserve in 1907 to form Imnaha National Forest, which was renamed Wallowa in 1908. In 1954, it was merged administratively with Whitman National Forest to create the present combined forest. The Wallowa name remains in use for this large section, which covered 997,063 acres in 2008.
