Washington Allston, known as “the American Titian,” was an artist and author born at Brookgreen on Nov. 5, 1779. He studied in London, Paris, and Venice, had a studio in London from 1811 to 1818, in Boston from 1818 to 1830, and in Cambridge from 1830 to 1843, where he died on July 9, 1843. Coleridge said Allston was a painter born to renew the 16th century.
