Armstrong County was created in 1876 and was named in honor of several Texas pioneers named Armstrong. Ranching became the chief industry when the huge JA Ranch was established there in 1876. Farming was introduced after the railroad came through in 1887. The county was organized in 1890, and the present courthouse was built in 1912.
