Target Rock National Wildlife Refuge protects eighty acres of shoreline, woodland, and wetlands on Long Island’s north shore east of Lloyd Harbor. Managed within the Long Island National Wildlife Refuge Complex, it preserves a varied coastal landscape including mature oak-hickory forest, a rocky half-mile beach, a brackish pond, and vernal ponds in a densely settled region. These habitats support many mammals, fish, reptiles, amphibians, and birds, especially migrating spring songbirds, wintering diving ducks, harbor seals, and protected shorebirds including piping plover, least tern, and common tern. Donated by Ferdinand Eberstadt, the land also preserves traces of its former garden estate and reflects the conversion of private estates into public conservation lands.
